Amma's 2015 International Women's Day Message
Embodiments of Divine Souls,
The International Women’s Day (IWD), 8th of March, each year celebrates women and their accomplishments around the world. It empowers women. Women make up half of the world’s population. Today I offer my support, love, and encouragement to all of the women and girls of the 193 Member States of the United Nations who lead their daily lives with courage and determination.
IWD is a time to end all forms of prejudice experienced by women and girls. Today one in three women will suffer some form of abuse in her life. Most of the time they never say anything, and women just swallow their pain. But we have to support women and girls with our selfless service, love, prayers and meditation. We have to have inner transformation. We have to have education to change the mindsets of women, and especially men and boys, to put a full stop to these very sad and painful situations.
This year is the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations and it is the beginning of the post-2015 development phase. This is a time to end poverty, change lives, and protect our world-home. The United Nations is the one that will bring the governments and societies around the world to work together for peace and the rights of women and girls. If women are not respected and empowered, then we will never have world peace. Women are the forces of change that bring new values of harmony and promote understanding.
We also celebrate another historic point in the UN’s history – the 20th Anniversary of the Beijing Conference on Women and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. These ensure women’s full participation and decision-making in every aspect of life. As our responsibility, the SMVA Trust will work to support UN programmes, such as “Health for All”, “Education for All”, “Every Woman, Every Child,” “Ending Gender Based Violence,” and the “He for She” campaign. We will work closely with UN Women, the main UN entity for gender equality.
We will partner with all of the efforts of the UN and its agencies for promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment. Our work in the world is on the same path to empower women and protect their rights through education, safety, and health care. I myself will continue to work unceasingly for our women. But we need to do more. Every woman has to feel safe in their home, safe in their workplace, and safe in their communities. Every woman has to be respected and honored in society. Every woman has to know her own inner strength and fully realize her potential.
