Washington, DC One Day Silent Meditation Retreat

           Saturday, May 24 , 2008

"It is meditation that will liberate us from the sensory world

and give us the experience of the pure Divine Consciousness."

Based on the success of last year's retreats, Amma has graciously offered to continue having One Day Retreats as part of her 2008 Tour. They are being offered so that more people can take advantage of this precious time with Amma in a retreat setting without disrupting their busy schedules. The retreats will provide a precious opportunity for devotees to deepen their meditation practice and to listen to the inspirational wisdom of Amma's divine discourses.

We cordially extend Amma's invitation to join her for the one day silent meditation retreat at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Silver Spring. All meditators, from beginners to those with an established practice, will benefit from the special retreat atmosphere. All will be spiritually nourished by Amma's serene presence, silent meditations, discourses and spiritual chanting.

There will be fifteen one day retreats during Sri Karunamayi's tour of North America. Please register early since these retreats tend

to fill up fast. A light lunch and snacks will be provided as part of the registration fee.

Please note that there will be a weekend Silent Meditation Retreat as part of the Guru Purnima celebrations in Houston from

July 18 - 20. Please visit our Guru Purnima page for more details.

Silver Spring, MD 20903

Directions

  1. UUCSS is located at 10309 New Hampshire Avenue, three blocks north of the Capitol Beltway.
  2. From the Capitol Beltway (I-495), use Exit 28 north on New Hampshire Avenue.
  3. Turn right in three blocks onto Oaklawn Drive.
  4. Turn right into the church parking lot at the bottom of the hill.

Driving from Washington, DC

You can get to the Church from anywhere in the District fairly easily, it is about a half-hour drive from downtown.

  1. Take 16th St. North to the District boundary at a traffic circle, where you bear right on Route 29 North, which is Colesville Road.
  2. Drive up Colesville Rd. past downtown Silver Spring, to the Beltway entrance marked “495 Baltimore.”
  3. From the Beltway go to the next exit, “Route 650, New Hampshire Ave., White Oak North.”
  4. Proceed three blocks and make a right on Oaklawn where you will see the church on the right.

Driving from Suburban Maryland

  • From Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Potomac, Kensington and much of lower Montgomery County: the easiest way to the church is the Beltway, I-495, and proceed as above.
  • For Northern Silver Spring, the church can be reached from Route 29, Colesville Road, South, to Route 650, New Hampshire Avenue, South.
  • If you are near Georgia Avenue, the best route is the Beltway and the directions above.
  • From Prince Georges County, the Beltway may be the best route, unless you are coming from somewhere near University Blvd.  In that case take University to Route 650, New Hampshire Avenue, North, and proceed as above.

Driving from Northern Virginia

No matter what time of day, the Beltway is the best way to the church from Northern Virginia. Take the inner loop past I-270 (but don't take I-270) towards Silver Spring.  It takes about 30 minutes from the American Legion Memorial Bridge.  Follow the directions above.

“Establish a permanent connection with Mother through meditation. Cultivate contentment and spread love and peace in service to your fellow beings in the world. This is your duty as a human being. If you assume this responsibility in your heart, if you hold Mother’s power in your heart, no power in this world can affect you.”
