MAKARA SANKRANTHI

(Makar Sankranti)

January 14, 2012

.

.

The most sacred day for Sri Mata Lalithambika Puja (worship) next to the Navratri festival is Makara Sankranthi.

The auspicious days of Navaratri bestow upon us great powers and Makara Sankranti graces us with knowledge and salvation.

The Skanda Purana
(Hindu religious texts) mentions Makara Sankranthi as an auspicious and holy day in the middle of Jaunuary (Pushya month of Telegu New Year). It is in the beginning of Uttarayana - the half of the solar year during which the path of the Sun moves northwards from the Tropic of Capricorn to the Tropic of Cancer.   This event marks the end of one 'celestial' night for the Devatas (Gods)  and the beginning of their 'day'. The doors of the heavens which have remained closed for the past six months because the Sun has been in Dakhshinayan i.e. Tropic of Capricorn are opened on the day of Makara Sankranth as the Lord Sun enters the constellation of Makar Raasi.

.

When the Sun enters the sign of Capricorn, the properties of it's rays change. The sunlight entering our body during this phase increases our strength and general well being as well as purifying our body and soul.

In the Sanskri
t language, the prefix “Sanor "Sam" means very or greatly; “kranthi” means progress or prosperity.

Positive actions of virtue performed on Maka Sankranthi day rewards you with postive results. If one could not perform divine worships during the Navaratri festival, Makara Sankranthi is another auspicious day to perform the same to derive the same benefit. It is believed that one will get punya (merit) benefit equivalent to the 10 million Friday vratams performed to Sri Lalithambika during Navartri if performed once during Maha Sankranthi.

During this Sankranthi, if one performs Sri Lalitha Abhishekam (holy bath) or Sri Chandi  Homa, one gets blessed with punya of great powers. If one merely lights an oiil lamp in the presence of Mother Goddess, all the karmas accumulated during all births including present birth get burnt and one becomes free from all karmas. Maha Sankranthi is an auspicious and important day to get the holy grace of the Divine Mother.
