The auspicious days of Vijayadasami bestow on us the great powers and Makara Sankranti graces us with knowledge and salvation.
Skanda Purana mentions Makara Sankranthi as an auspicious and holy day in the beginning of Uttarayana (the half of the solar year during which the path of the sun moves northwards from the tropic of Capricorn to the tropic of cancer). Sun rays are vital for all living beings on earth and essential for their life sustenance. The sun rays contain the life power. In the middle of January ( pushya month of Telugu New year) when Lord Sun enters into the constellation of Makar Raasi is the auspicious day and that is Makara Sankranthi.
“Sam” means more auspicious than auspicious; “kranthi” means progress.
Sankranthi is more auspicious than auspicious progress giver and in this holy uttarayan time, if divine prayers are performed, one can achieve auspicious desired results.

One will get punya benefit equivalent to the 10 million Friday vratams performed to Sri Lalithambika if performed once in Sankranthi.
During this Samkranthi, if one performs Sri Lalithama Abhishekam(holy bath), Sri Chandika Homam, one gets blessed with punya derived from performing 10 million vrathams during Fridays. Sankranthi importance is so much, its divine light is so sacred of sacredness.
Makara Sankranthi signifies suspicious day for performing Sri Lalitha Sahsranamam for Mother Goddess and equivalent to 10 million vrathams of Fridays performing. There is no other auspicious day than Sankranthi in performing worship to Mother Goddess. This day bestows the devotees with great powers if poojas are performed to Sri Lalithamba.
