The Significance of Navaratri

Eradication of all sins and removal of all difficulties in this world and beyond are the blessings attained by the performance of Chandi Homa and the chanting of Chandi Sapta Shati.

On the night of the new moon the world is enveloped in darkness. So when the darkness of difficulties engulfs one’s life, the worship of Sri Chandika Parameshwari Devi, the group chanting of Chandi Sapta Shati according to the injunctions of the scriptures and the performance of Chandi Homas during Navaratri is like the sunrise that dispels that darkness.

Mother never disregards the love, chanting and worship offered by Her devotees during Navaratri. She removes all the darkness of ignorance and great clouds of difficulties from their lives and, no matter who they might be, She grants them a place close to Her lotus feet. Such is the tender and compassionate heart of Divine Mother Sri Mata who is ever ready to grace Her devotees. During the powerful days of Navaratri, when we worship Sri Chandika Parameshwari Devi with Chandi Path and Chandi Homa, the dawn of true knowledge illumines our hearts and the dark night of ignorance is very naturally dispelled by Devi’s grace.

Sri Chandi Path grants salvation. In this great scripture the essence of Para Brahman is described in three ways:

  1. Sthula rupam, gross form.
  2. Sukshma rupam, subtle form.
  3. Para rupam, transcendental form.

1. Stula rupam: The gross form of the Divine includes the five elements, the sky and all the great planets that revolve in it, the multitude of living forms and human beings and everything in nature, such as, mountains and ocean. All these are born from Parabrahman, the Supreme Absolute. That is why we see and feel that everything in the world is Supreme Divine Mother Parabrahmamayi and serve Her by distributing food and clothing to the needy. All these external actions are the true worship of Divine Mother Sri Mata’s gross form.

2. Sukshma rupam: Mother’s subtle form is mantra, sacred chants. Just as the huge banyan tree is hidden in its tiny seed, all the subtle sound vibrations of letters are born from Omkara, the primordial, sacred sound, “Om.” When a large group of people chant mantras in one voice, great waves of extraordinary energy are produced.

When an individual lights a lamp, the whole room is filled with radiance and it also shines on the individual. When a hundred people light lamps in a hundred different rooms, only one light shines on each of them. However, when a hundred people gather together in one room and light a hundred lamps, the brilliance of those hundred lights shines on all of them. This means that each individual is receiving the radiance of those hundred lights. Similarly, like a hundred lights, collective meditation and collective reading aloud have a profound and wonderful effect on all the individuals present. During Navaratri when a hundred people chant the Chandi Path in a systematic  manner without any mispronunciations, the amazing and powerful waves of energy spread through the whole atmosphere providing shanti, shakti and abhishta siddhi—peace, divine energy and the fulfillment of desires.

That is why the subtle energies in the five elements are worshipped as Parabrahman, the Absolute.

  1. Nada rupam: the worship of Parabrahman as the sound waves of sacred mantras.
  2. Kalasha rupam: worship of the water in the sacred metal water pot.
  3. Bhumi rupam: the worship of Mother Earth with medicinal herbs to bring peace to the world.
  4. Yajna rupam: the worship of fire in the form of yajna or homa, the sacred fire ceremony.
  5. Vayu rupam: the worship of air through pranayama, regulated breathing through the inhalation and exhalation of prana, life energy.

The five elements are meditated on and worshipped in this subtle way.

3. Para rupam: In its transcendental form we worship Parabrahman through silent meditation.

No one can take a leap into space and stand there. One must first go through a series of steps. That is why we first see Parabrahman everywhere and in everything in its sthula rupam, gross form. Then, we see its sukshma rupam, subtle form, and worship Parabrahman in the form of the five elements. And finally we come to para rupam, the transcendental form, and we worship Parabrahman through silent meditation which leads to the experience of samadhi, the thought-free state. Chanting of Sri Chandi Path and performance of Chandi Homa encompass all these three forms of worship.

During Navaratri, when we serve Sri Mata through mantra japa and puja—prescribed chanting of mantras and worship—She sets us free from all our defects of seven past births. She eradicates even the most heinous sin of brahma hatya, the crime of murder. All our blemishes and negativities are removed like rust from iron. The chanting of Sri Chandika Parameshwari Devi’s Chandi Path removes all difficulties and sorrows.

Due to the powerful energy and brilliant aura that surrounds Sri Mata it is impossible for anyone to approach or confront Her. Thirty million devatas, divine energies, surround Her and are Her beautiful shining ornaments. For those who surrender to Her, these devatas are like kamadhenus, wish fulfilling celestial cows.

By worshipping the Universal Mother Sri Jagadamba at least on Saptami, Durgashtami and Maharnavami—the seventh, eighth and ninth days of Navaratri—devotees will easily cross the ocean of difficulties and attain all auspicious things and wonderful shakti, divine energy.

Among all Maha Shakti pithams, temples dedicated to the worship of Divine Mother, Sri Lalitambika Devi Trishakti Maha Pitham is the supremely powerful temple dedicated to three Shaktis, Sri Lalitambika Devi, Sri Maha Lakshmi Devi and Sri Maha Saraswati Devi. Here Sri Lalitambika Devi is the presiding deity endowed with every form of energy. When devotees worship Sri Lalita Parameshwari in this powerful temple, She immediately fulfills all their wishes.

Through this temple situated in Manidwipa, we desire auspicious benefits for everyone in this world and universal peace.

Chandi Sapta Shati is a scripture of 700 verses to Divine Mother which describes Her victorious fight against the forces of evil. It is also known as Chandi Path.
