During the time that she spent in the Penusila forest, which is in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, Amma became intimately familiar with the special problems faced by the villagers living there. The most urgent problems include a lack of access to adequate health care and education. The free hospital and school are two major projects that grew out of this direct exposure to the problems faced by rural villagers in South India. A major theme in Amma's teachings is that in order to realize the eternal, divine Self that dwells within us, we must learn to see that same supreme Self in all beings. By offering our compassionate service to all beings without discrimination, we can grow into our true nature as the embodiments of divine love.

""Those who serve the needy selflessly will receive the full blessings of the Divine Mother, who resides in the hearts of all beings. The practice of service and charity allows us to experience the bliss of oneness and prepares our minds for the descent of divine light."~ Amma
